The pulses of light gently penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the targeted melanin in the skin. Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin a darker color. When melanin forms together in a clump, it creates the appearance of sunspots and age spots. The intense pulses of light break up the cluster, which effectively eliminates dark spots on the skin.
The pulses of light can also be used to target hemoglobin, a component of the blood. The light damages the blood vessels containing the hemoglobin. This destroys them, and they are eventually absorbed by the body. This type of IPL treatment is ideal for treating dilated blood vessels, and broken blood vessels.
To see the best possible results, it is recommended that you undergo a series of six treatments. To maintain your results, it is best that you receive routine treatments every month after your initial package of treatments.
An IPL treatment can take 15 to 30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the area and the tissue being treated. Some patients experience mild discomfort, but the treatment should not produce any pain. A tingling sensation may be felt on the skin during the treatment.
While results can be seen after as little as one treatment, most patients will need about six treatments to achieve their desired results. Treatments are typically scheduled a month apart to avoid unwanted tissue damage.
