A bikini treatment clears the hair that would show outside your underwear or swimsuit line. A Brazilian goes much further: the front, the bikini line, the labia and usually the area toward the back. If you want a clean edge and are happy with some hair left, start with a bikini. If you want to be smooth throughout, choose a Brazilian. The names are not standardized, so always ask a provider to map out the exact areas before you book.
TL;DR
- Bikini treats the outer line and sides. It is a smaller area, a quicker visit and usually the lower price.
- Brazilian treats the front, the bikini line and the intimate and rear areas, with the option to leave a strip or shape in front.
- Most people need 2 to 6 treatments, and the number depends on hair, skin and the area (American Academy of Dermatology).
- Skin tone and hair color decide which laser is safe for you. Darker skin needs a provider experienced with it.
- Ask for a written map of the treated areas and a price quote at a consultation. At Sudbury Med Spa, consultations are free.

What each treatment covers
Spa menus use the same words for different things, which is why this keyword confuses so many people. Here is how we describe the common options at a consultation.
| Option | What is usually treated | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Bikini line | Hair that would peek out of a swimsuit or underwear, along the sides and the top of the thigh crease | Someone who wants a neat edge and is fine with hair elsewhere |
| Full or extended bikini | The bikini line plus more of the front and upper pubic area | Someone who wants less hair without going fully bare |
| Brazilian | The front, bikini line and labia, extending toward the back, often with a strip or shape left in front if you like | Someone who wants to feel smooth almost everywhere |
| Hollywood | Everything, with no strip left | Someone who wants no hair in the area at all |
Two things matter more than the label. First, ask whether the price includes the area between the cheeks and the perianal area, because some providers quote that separately. Second, ask whether you can keep a strip, a triangle or a smaller patch. A Brazilian can be customized, and a good provider will mark your design before any pulse is fired.
Bikini vs. Brazilian: how to decide
Think about three things: how much hair you want gone, how you feel about the sensitive areas, and how long you want the appointments to run.
Choose a bikini if
- You mainly care about what shows in swimwear or fitted clothing.
- You want to try laser on a smaller area first and see how your skin reacts.
- You prefer shorter visits. Smaller areas take less time under the handpiece.
- Your budget calls for the smaller treatment area.
Choose a Brazilian if
- You want to stop shaving or waxing most of the area.
- You are tired of ingrown hairs and irritation from frequent shaving. (We cover that in our guide to laser hair removal and ingrown hairs.)
- You plan to treat the whole area anyway, since a bikini first and a Brazilian later means paying twice for the overlapping zone.
A practical way to choose
Picture the hair you shave or wax today. If you routinely remove it all, a bikini will leave a visible gap between the cleared edge and the rest, and many people end up upgrading mid-course. If you only ever trim the edges, a Brazilian is more than you need. Bring a photo or a drawing of the look you want to the consultation, and we will map it onto the treatment areas.
What a full Brazilian includes
A full Brazilian covers the front, the bikini line, the labia, and the hair between and behind. Because hair in these places varies in thickness and growth rate, a provider typically adjusts the settings for each zone. Customization is part of the service: you decide whether the front is cleared entirely, thinned, or shaped. Zones near the back can feel different from the front, and some people find those spots need an extra session or two to look as even as the rest.
It is also normal for the intimate area to be treated with special care. Expect to be draped, to be asked for your comfort level, and to be able to stop at any point.
How many sessions to expect
The American Academy of Dermatology says most patients need 2 to 6 treatments (AAD). Laser works on hairs in their growth phase, so a single visit never catches everything, and sessions are spaced weeks apart so each round hits a new group of follicles.
Bikini and Brazilian areas follow the same rule. The difference is the surface: a Brazilian simply has more skin and more follicles to clear, so each visit is longer. Hormones, hair thickness and color can add visits. If you have PCOS, for example, read what to expect with laser hair removal and PCOS, because the hair often needs more sessions alongside medical care.
What it costs, and what moves the price
Price is what most people want first, and it is where a Brazilian and a bikini differ the most. A bikini is smaller, so it generally costs less per visit. A Brazilian costs more per visit because it covers more area, and you pay for each session in the course.
What shifts the number:
- Treatment area. A bikini line, a full bikini and a Brazilian are separate price tiers at most providers.
- Number of sessions. A package or membership often lowers the per-visit cost compared with paying visit by visit.
- Your hair and skin. Coarse, dense hair or hormonal growth can add visits.
- Add-on areas. Underarms or legs treated in the same visit are often priced as a bundle.
- Provider and equipment. A medical team using clinical-grade lasers charges differently from a salon.
We do not publish a single price for laser hair removal, because it depends on your area and your plan. We quote it in person at a free consultation, after we see your skin and hair. We do publish yearly membership prices: SILVER is $399 per year, GOLD is $499 per year and PLATINUM is $599 per year. Ask us how a membership fits a laser course.
Insurance rarely helps. Mayo Clinic notes that laser hair removal done for cosmetic reasons is generally not covered, though it may be if a medical condition requires it (Mayo Clinic). Ask about financing, which we offer, so a course can be spread out.
Skin tone and hair color
Laser aims at pigment in the hair, so contrast between hair and skin matters. The AAD says laser hair removal can be performed on all skin types and colors when there is contrast between skin and hair color, and that darker skin is more prone to burns and dark marks, so you should see a provider experienced in treating darker skin with lasers (AAD). The bikini area is already more prone to darkening in many people, so this matters here.
Two of our guides go deeper: 1064 nm laser hair removal for dark skin explains test pulses and cooling, and laser hair removal with a tan explains when a tan means waiting.
Before your appointment
Preparation is the same for both areas, and it affects both safety and results.
- Stay out of the sun and tanning beds. Mayo Clinic advises avoiding sun exposure, tanning beds and sunless tanning products before treatment (Mayo Clinic). Our page on laser hair removal and sun exposure covers timing.
- Stop waxing, plucking and electrolysis. Mayo Clinic says to stop at least four weeks before, because the laser needs the hair root in place. Shaving is the usual method for the area.
- Tell your provider about medicines. The AAD asks you to mention if you have taken isotretinoin or take any other medicine, including over-the-counter ones such as aspirin (AAD).
- Shave as instructed. Your provider will tell you when to shave and how closely.
During and after treatment
Everyone in the room wears protective eyewear, and some patients get numbing gel (AAD). The bikini area is sensitive, so most people feel snapping or stinging, and a Brazilian has more of it simply because there is more area. Our article on laser hair removal pain lists four clinician tips for staying comfortable.
Afterward, redness and swelling often last 1 to 3 days. Avoid direct sun and indoor tanning, and follow your provider’s after-care instructions. The AAD lists possible effects including scarring and changes in skin color, which is why choosing an experienced team matters (AAD). Call your provider if something looks worse than the expected redness and swelling.
Can you do it at home?
Home devices exist, and people ask about them for the bikini line because it feels private. They are built for convenience and are used by you on your own, so you are the one judging skin tone, hair color and the setting. In a clinic, a trained provider selects the laser, tests a patch, adjusts for each zone and watches how your skin responds. That matters most in the bikini area, where skin is thin and darkens easily. If you are unsure whether a device suits your skin, a free consultation is a low-risk way to compare.
Perspective
We see the same pattern every month: someone books a bikini line to save money, loves the first result, and then asks to extend it a few visits later. When a client already knows they want to be smooth throughout, a Brazilian planned from the start gives a more even result and a cleaner plan.
Our approach is to start with the look you want, not the menu name. We map the treated area with you at a free consultation, choose settings for your skin and hair, and build a plan with the visit count and cost in front of you. With more than 15,000 treatments behind our team, led by our founder Natalie NgocTrang, we are comfortable telling you which option fits, including when a smaller area is the right start.
Comfort matters as much as technique. We keep the room clean and private, explain every step, and pause whenever you want.

FAQ
What does Brazilian bikini laser mean?
It usually means a Brazilian treatment: hair removal from the front through the bikini line, labia and toward the back, with the option of leaving a strip. Some providers use the term loosely, so confirm the areas in writing before you pay.
Is a bikini line laser the same as a full bikini?
No. A bikini line treats the hair that shows outside a swimsuit edge. A full or extended bikini adds more of the front area. A Brazilian goes beyond both. Ask your provider to show you the boundary on your skin.
Are fillers safe while breastfeeding?
Cleveland Clinic advises that people who are breastfeeding should not get cheek filler (Cleveland Clinic). It also lists infection, allergic reaction, bruising and swelling as risks. If you are nursing, tell your injector and your own doctor before booking any injectable.
Is Botox safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
This is a question for your obstetrician or your own clinician before you book. Tell our team at the consultation if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or nursing, and we will plan around your doctor’s advice. Laser hair removal, injectables and other treatments each have different considerations.
Does insurance cover laser hair removal?
Usually not for cosmetic reasons. Mayo Clinic says it may be covered when a medical condition requires it (Mayo Clinic). Ask your insurer directly if you have a condition such as one that causes ingrown or infected hairs.
